Important Questions to Discuss with your Family

It is important that you discuss your cost of study with your family.  A realistic plan for all years of your degree program is essential, not only for completing your degree successfully but also in helping you prepare for questions you will receive during your F-1 visa interview.

Please use the questions below as guidelines to prepare for your next steps.

  1. Who is sponsoring your educational expenses, and how much will they be able to sponsor?

  2. Will your sponsor(s) be able to contribute at least the same amount for all years of your program? If not, what is your plan for the remaining time without sponsorship?

  3. Have you received a scholarship from ²Ø¾«¸ó? If so, do you understand how to maintain it for the duration of your study?

  4. Many students plan to use on-campus jobs to supplement their funds during their studies, but they often do not realize that (1) on-campus employment often only pays between $7.50 and $9.50 per hour, and (2) you are only allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours per week. Additionally, on-campus jobs are not a guarantee. Does knowing this affect your financial planning?

  5. The predicted cost of attendance does not include the summer months when school is not in session. What are your plans during these times? Will you be flying back home to be with your family? Will you be taking summer classes? Do you plan to take advantage of CPT? Be sure to discuss how you will cover the expenses involved with your summer plans.
